Amy-
I agree with you and I think if you use music it might take away from what you are trying to show the audience. I would also think about useing more voice overs than text boxs. The voice over is more personal and I think it would make your film more powerful. What would you say in your voice overs? Because I know what you had on your story board but it seemed like that was going to be to much and make your film to long.

Hi Amy--

Do you feel as if you've had an "a ha" moment? It looks like that from this vantage point! I think you'll be able to use a LOT of this for your film. My sense is that you want to focus on the last paragraph here, and find a specific instance or evocative moment that will help us understand your decision to refuse to buy new things. With that in place, you'll be able to "anchor" your reflections about how this places you within a generational spread of women in your family.

Amy--
You've got your "essay"--so now it's time to think visually, metaphorically. Perhaps there's a way that your images and film techniques could mirror your ideas about "old" things? Where will you include voicovers and what text will you write and record?

Amy,
Wow! I think you're discovering really rich layers here in this subject. You're weaving together personal history, family, ecology, an (anti) materialism in interesting ways. I'm still really curious about your recent vow not to buy anything new (what are the "obvious exceptions"?) and what this actually means in your daily life. It sounds like a rather simple resolution, but I can imagine there have been unforseen challenges and discoveries as you try to live a life of reducing, reusing, recycling. As a viewer, I'd love to learn more about the reasons and ramifications of making this life choice.

Amy,
I don't think you need live footage of everything. I think you could use the internet as a resource. Maybe find a grandmothers hand on-line; it could even be a still image. I also think that you could just pick a few images like Kim said in class and focus on them (show them all in the beginning). And I agree with you, we all have so much to do before Thursday! I think you should narrow it down and only pick a few things to focus on, especially because we only have so much time. And I think voice overs would be helpful, but you could include some of the metaphors on the storyboard.

I looks like you've got a good idea about what you need to get done. I think we all have a lot of work ahead of us to get these films done! What kind of commercial clips are you planning on using? were these goning old clips? new clips? or some of both? I think that the sound is a key feature here because it can help you tell your story. I dont know if I would use an actual song, just because of what we talked about today in class, but I would use voice overs, maybe you and your grandmothers voice. I think that would make it seem real to the audience.

I think you have a nice full list of things you need to do. I hope you feel a little bit more clear now about your ideas then you did in class. (Don't worry we all feel the same way!) I think your idea of sound is something that you could really work to your advantage especially with the whole old to new idea. What do you mean by film of garbage out? How are you going to show this? I deffinitely think the idea of showing a slight bit of a hand in the safe or something like that will make your grandmother's safe more personal and effective to the audience.

Hi Amy---Yup, what Megan said. I have some ideas for images from what you say above, but I don't know how to advise you to use them to affect your audience until I know what you want to understand about experience, what you're trying to "essay."

Amy,
You've got the beginnings of some potentially powerful images and scenes here--with your grandmother, the safe, the discovery of the vintage dress. But this isn't yet a film treatment. I recommend reading the details of the film treatment on our class page. The questions are designed to get you thinking about your essay (what are you trying to understand about yourself and your obsession?) and how you might represent that visually.
